Packing for a week in Yellowstone National Park with kids sounds like the kind of thing that requires three giant suitcases, a roof box, and a mild emotional breakdown.

But after multiple national park trips with our family of four, we’ve learned something important:

You do not need that much stuff.

A week's worth of clothing in a carry-on for a Yellowstone National Park trip.
A week's worth of clothing in a carry-on for a Yellowstone National Park trip.

In fact, you can absolutely pack for a 7-day Yellowstone trip using:

  • one carry-on per person

  • one personal item each

Even with kids. Even with Yellowstone’s unpredictable weather.

Here’s exactly how we do it.

The Secret to Packing Light for Yellowstone

The biggest mistake families make when packing for Yellowstone National Park (or any national park trip, really) is bringing a full outfit for every day.

Don’t do that.

Yellowstone is casual, outdoorsy, and all about layers. Nobody cares if you wear the same fleece three times while spotting bison. And we guarantee you will see more than five tourists who appear woefully over- or underdressed for the occasion.

Instead, pack:

  • 3–4 days of mix-and-match clothing

  • layers for changing weather

  • quick-dry pieces you can rewear

If your hotel, cabin, or RV has laundry access, carry-on-only travel becomes so much easier.

What We Pack for Each Person

Clothing

For both adults and kids, we stick to:

  • 5 shirts (3 short sleeve, 2 long sleeve)

  • 2 pairs of pants

  • 2 pairs of shorts

  • 1 fleece, hoodie or sweatshirt

  • 1 packable down/down-alternative jacket (our kids loved these)

  • 1 lightweight rain jacket

  • 2 set of pajamas

  • 7 pairs underwear

  • 5 pairs of socks

  • swimsuit

  • lightweight pair of gloves and warm hat (June snowstorms are real)

  • Baseball cap or sun hat

That’s it. Yellowstone weather changes constantly, so layering matters far more than having lots of outfits. We recommend moisture-wicking or quick-dry material wherever possible.

Shoes: Keep It Simple

Shoes take up the most suitcase space.

For Yellowstone, each person really only needs:

  • one comfortable hiking shoe or sneaker (most tourists in Yellowstone never get far from a boardwalk or a well-trodden trail)

  • one water sandal (our family loves Keens) or pair of Crocs

  • A pair of flip flops or slides to double as house/camp shoes

Unless you’re doing intense backcountry hiking, bulky hiking boots usually aren’t necessary, unless you're just going for a vibe.

The Carry-On Packing Hack That Saves Us Every Time

Compression packing cubes. Seriously. They’re magic.

They keep everyone organized, save space, and make it much easier to survive hotel room chaos with kids.

Playbook Pro Tip: Pack one cube with everyone's pajamas for the first night and a change of clothes for the next morning. This makes your evening arrival go so much more smoothly.

We also have each child carry their own backpack as their personal item. Inside:

  • snacks

  • headphones

  • tablet and charging cord

  • coloring books and crayons

  • insulated water bottle

  • sweatshirt

  • A thin towel or blanket buckled into a side pocket (helps for sleeping on the plane or car naps)

  • binoculars and compass (more for the adventure of it than necessity)

  • hand sanitizer

This bag doubles as their airplane bag and their daypack in the park.

What We Wear on the Plane

To save suitcase space, we wear our bulkiest items:

  • sneakers or hiking boots

  • sweatshirt/fleece

  • pants

  • baseball cap

Bonus: airplanes are always freezing anyway.

Yellowstone Weather Tip

Even in summer, mornings in Yellowstone can be cold, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. The National Park Service recommends dressing in layers and bringing waterproof outerwear. (nps.gov)

Our family basically rotates the same:

  • t-shirts

  • fleeces

  • lightweight jackets

....all week long.

And honestly? It works great.

Final Thoughts

Packing light for Yellowstone makes the whole trip easier:

  • less airport stress

  • faster hotel unpacking

  • cleaner car

  • fewer “where’s my jacket?!” moments

Which is very on-brand for us over here at Parks Playbook: Less chaos. More campfires.
